When the homeowners of this Lake Geneva home began the project, the goal was clear: create a home with impeccable quality and an Old World European feel. In addition, they wanted a crisp schedule with completion in time for the family's Thanksgiving holiday. With an uncompromising commitment to quality and a 9-month construction schedule from start to finish, Scherrer Construction was the perfect choice as builder.
At 12,000 square feet, the home is typical of Scherrer's Signature Series residences. The first glimpse of the home, from the gas lantern-lit driveway, is spectacular. The curved-top garage doors are surrounded in stone, have generous window sections, distinctive hardware and interesting trim, demonstrating the Old World feel that is integral to the home's design. Flanked by stone courtyards, the impact is warm and inviting.
The home's design uses an interesting mix of gentle curves, a steep roof pitch and a lot of stone – both inside and out. For Culligan Abraham Architecture, integrating complex design elements is a fundamental part of their thinking. Small details throughout the home – including the original trim patterns on the doors – contribute to its unique character.
This kind of project is a perfect fit for Designer Doors. Our Chicago territory manager worked closely with both architect and builder to provide the best possible design solutions and to deliver perfectly crafted doors. "Jeff Van Horne really gets it," said Mike Abraham. "He really understands what we're trying to achieve with the design of the doors down to the smallest details. He makes it easy."
James Scherrer, Scherrer Construction's President and CEO, talked about the work they've done with Designer Doors on numerous projects in the Lake Geneva area including this particular home. "Some of the key reasons why we recommend Designer Doors is their exceptional customer service, their custom door solutions, and their high quality craftsmanship. In the construction business, it is important to work with qualified, timely contractors and Designer Doors never fails Scherrer Construction. We always have a hassle-free experience on the jobsite."
There are 3 sets of garage doors on the property: the curved top doors shown above, a square-top door and a set of swinging doors on the carriage house. The square-top door incorporates the look of a wicket door – a door within a door – and two false posts to provide visual interest. While each set of doors is unique to the location and purpose, they share common design elements and are linked to the overall design by distinctive trim and hardware.
This unified approach to design is a fundamental part of Designer Doors' approach, what we call Architectural Harmony™. Working with homeowners, architects and builders around the country, we encourage our clients to customize every aspect of their doors, shutters and gates so they align perfectly with the home's unique design features. The end result, as shown here, is truly spectacular.
