Wood garage and entry doors have one main enemy: moisture. No matter how well the door is built, if it's not built to handle moisture, it will not last. It's just that simple.
Back in the early days of Designer Doors, we were intrigued by doors that had endured a century of midwestern weather and were still strong. Where many new doors just a decade or so old were being replaced, these old doors still performed beautifully. We understood that moisture was the issue and began figuring out systems to prevent problems in the doors Designer Doors was building and installing.
Today, we continue to replace doors that other companies have built. We know these doors were beautiful when they were installed. But over time, moisture has damaged that appearance and in a few short years they not only look bad, but they've started to deteriorate. The photo on the right is exactly that. It was built by a solid competitor. As you can see, they don't take moisture management quite as seriously as we do. It's probably the biggest difference between our doors. Unfortunately, the impact of that isn't obvious to the homeowner until a few years down the road.
What we do works. Plain and simple.

The Auto Wash has an approach we really love. It's a family-owned business that's trying to do that best job it can for its customers. They are good neighbors with a respect for the area's history and the environment. The building was designed and built to complement the former rail line that borders the property - a former dump.
Our doors have stood up to this humid enviroment and the heavy-duty use they get in a car wash. And they're still beautiful. That's proof our doors can handle moisture.
MOISTURE CONTROL: HOW WE DO IT.
We know you don't live in a car wash, but our exclusive Moisture Control System assures that our custom wood garage doors will last for years to come in whatever environment they may be. This system includes:
“Wet” glazed windows: each piece of glass is sealed in place by a “wet” bead of sealant.
Drip Cap: a beveled moulding recessed into the surface material along the top edge of the bottom trim board. The drip cap prevents water from pooling on the bottom board and seeping into the door thus minimizing the possibility of mold or wood rot.
Vent Holes: holes drilled into each section of the garage door’s interior to facilitate the natural movement of moisture within the door caused by temperature and humidity changes. This prevents the damaging build-up of moisture within the door’s interior cavity.
No exposed vertical end grain on door bottom: horizontal cap board seals off the end grain of the tongue and groove surface material, which tends to “wick” rain and snow moisture.
Beveled trim board under the lite sections: sheds water and prevents pooling and potential leakage into the door’s interior cavity, again maximizing the life of the door.
SWAMPLAND? INSECTS AND HUMIDITY? NO PROBLEM.
For structures in high humidity environments, or where there is a proliferation of wood-boring insects, Designer Doors recommends our High Humidity/Insect Resistant Package for extra wood protection. (I think we're looking at you, Florida.)
We implant highly effective, EPA-approved Borate Rods into the door frame, reducing the possibility of damage from fungus, termites, carpenter ants, a variety of beetles and many other wood-boring species. Borates are highly toxic to fungal decay and many insects but are not harmful to humans or other mammals. This package is included on all windload doors.
